Instead, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman approached the director and asked if he wanted to make any changes. Sorkin told Vanity Fair that Rothman “opened the checkbook and gave us three days of shooting” after the director identified two scenes that could be improved.

The plot of “The Social Reckoning” tracks former Facebook engineer and whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, alongside Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White. Their reporting formed the basis of “The Facebook Files,” a 2021 investigative series detailing the platform’s impacts on teenagers and its spread of misinformation linked to political violence, including the events of January 6. Despite the inclusion of the January 6 riot, the script avoids naming Donald Trump. Sorkin stated that the decision was entirely his own, noting that he promised Rothman unprovoked that the film would not feature Trump signage or “Make America Great Again” slogans. Sony’s outside legal counsel required script adjustments. A senior executive’s line, “I don’t know what that bitch thinks she’s doing,” was altered because the legal team demanded proof that an actual executive had used that specific term against an ex-employee.

Sorkin explained that studio executives arranged test screenings consisting of groups of 70 people, all drawn exclusively from employees on the Sony lot. Acknowledging the limitations of this approach, Sorkin remarked that it did not constitute a representative polling sample.
