A grant program designed to spur quick improvements in communities across the country is now accepting applications. The AARP Community Challenge, now in its tenth year, offers funding for projects aimed at enhancing livability, particularly for those age 50 and older.
Grant Details and Focus
Launched in 2017, the AARP Community Challenge is accepting applications through March 4, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET / 2:00 p.m. PT. The program is open to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) nonprofit organizations, as well as government entities and other organizations on a case-by-case basis. All funded projects must be completed by December 15, 2026.
This year, AARP is offering three distinct funding tracks. Flagship Grants, ranging from a few hundred dollars to $15,000, support improvements in Public Places, Transportation, Housing, Digital Connections, and Disaster Resilience. Capacity-Building Microgrants provide $2,500 alongside expert support for initiatives like Walk Audits, Bike Audits, HomeFit® Guide Modifications, and Disaster Preparedness Training. Finally, Demonstration Grants, typically ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 (and not exceeding $25,000), are designed to replicate successful local efforts in areas like Pedestrian Safety (with support from Toyota Motor North America), High-Speed Internet (with support from Microsoft), and Housing Design Competitions.
Program Goals
The AARP Community Challenge aims to accelerate local ideas, encourage innovation, overcome policy barriers, and attract additional funding and support for community projects. According to AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel, past grantees have already “made tangible improvements that spark long-term change in communities across New York.”
The program is part of AARP’s broader Livable Communities initiative, which advocates for communities that offer safe streets, affordable housing, reliable transportation, access to services, and opportunities for civic and social engagement.
