The diplomatic standoff hinges on a proposal presented during meetings in New York, where Iranian officials outlined conditions for normalizing maritime passage through the crucial shipping lane. According to the official IRNA news agency, the roadmap calls for the United States to lift oil sanctions, end the naval blockade on Iranian ports, and release frozen Iranian assets. Once met, those steps would allow the strategic waterway to reopen within a week while talks on a final deal begin.
Araghchi Awaits Mediator Response While Rejecting Coercion
Speaking to reporters, Araghchi confirmed that Tehran had taken note of the initial public reactions from Washington but remained focused on official channels. He said the conditions had been explained to the mediators, who then relayed them to the US.
Reiterating Tehran’s baseline stance against pressure, Araghchi maintained that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward for resolving the deadlock. Our conditions are clear,
he said. The foreign minister added that Iran would continue pursuing diplomacy while refusing to relinquish its rights under pressure.
The foreign minister also stressed that any movement toward reopening the strait remains contingent on Washington fulfilling the outlined conditions.
