Rise in Political Tensions: Gerindra‘s Maruarar Backs KPK, PDIP Alleges Politicization
Jakarta, Indonesia – Maruarar Sirait, a high-profile politician from the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), has responded to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) naming PDIP’s secretary-general, Hasto Kristiyanto, as a suspect in a case involving former General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner, Wahyu Setiawan. Maruarar emphasized the importance of respecting the legal process.
Maruarar, also known as ‘Ara’,stated, "I believe we should respect the legal process," during an interview at his residence in the Menteng area of Jakarta. He reiterated Indonesia’s status as a nation of laws, stressing the importance of allowing legal processes to run their course.
Regarding the ongoing ‘Capture Harun Masiku’ challenge, Maruarar expressed confidence that the nation could apprehend the legendary criminal. "If anyone can capture him, then certainly, this nation can apprehend Harun Masiku," he said.
PDIP spokesman, Chico Hakim, however, has accused certain parties of attempting to disrupt and sink PDIP’s reputation regarding Hasto’s nomination as a suspect. "There’s a strong political motivation in this case," Chico told reporters. "The fact that two suspects in the BI CSR case were initially cleared is evidence of that. There’s a clear effort to hinder PDI Perjuangan and even take it over."
KPK, meanwhile, dismissed allegations of politicization, insisting that Hasto’s nomination as a suspect was purely a matter of law enforcement. "The decision to name Hasto a suspect is solely based on legal considerations," said KPK chairman Setyo Budiyanto at a press conference in Jakarta.
