Elite biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid will balance his athletic career with rigorous university studies in physics and astronomy at the University of Oslo, according to interviews given during the Blinkfestivalen in Sandnes. After securing five medals at the Olympic Games, the 29-year-old athlete stated that he aims to pursue higher education starting Monday, while maintaining his commitment to biathlon if the academic workload proves manageable.

Lægreid plans to begin classes in physics and astronomy at the University of Oslo, marking his return to higher education in the STEM field. He passed secondary school with top marks, earning 23 top grades (sixes) on his diploma.
“Physics and astronomy, so not the lightest. But if I get a course done in a semester, then I’ll be satisfied,” Lægreid told NRK in Sandnes.
The biathlete noted that living in the same city as the university increases his chances of success this time. He relies on assistance from fellow students and remains undecided about participating in traditional student orientation events. “I have no plans to be in the freshman week, but maybe I have to with regard to the rest of the season,” he said.
Motivation and Balance Outside Professional Biathlon
Reflecting on his athletic achievements, Lægreid emphasized that personal growth and learning drove his decision to return to school following the conclusion of the season in Holmenkollen in late March. Lægreid stated that life is more than just biathlon, adding that learning and studies are areas he felt he missed in his life.
“I have achieved what I want to do with the sport, so then everything is a bonus. Not that I’m going to be less serious, but allow more things in life.”

Uldal shared his own academic history, noting he attempted mechanical engineering education three times but completed at most one semester. Despite finding student life incompatible with his own schedule, Uldal expressed confidence in Lægreid’s academic capabilities, citing his intelligence and limited social media usage.
New men’s national team assistant coach Anders Øverby also endorsed the athlete’s decision. Øverby told NRK that he has a bit of faith that people must be allowed to do what they want and thrive with, noting that the coaching staff feels confident they will continue to receive sufficient focus and training from Lægreid.

Uldal took third place in the same event.
Later on Friday, Lægreid qualified for the supersprint final. He recorded three missed targets and finished eighth, 33 seconds behind winner Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen.
