Until this year Costa Rica travels the international final of the Rip Curl GromSearch 2019, which takes place from May 16 to 19 at Playa Hermosa, one of the most renowned surf spots in the Costa Rican country. The best surfers of the planet Sub-16 will meet in the Costa Rican sand to crown the best promise of surfing in the world male and female category. Spaniards Adur Amatriain and Melania Suárez will be among them to try to make history, getting what would be the first victory for our country in the prestigious event.
The Basque and the Canarian got their place after being the most regular surfers in the three tests of GromSearch disputed last season in our country. Thus, in Playa Hermosa they will face the respective champions of the regional circuits of other countries and continents. In total there will be 24 riders -12 boys and 12 girls- participants from countries such as the United States, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Indonesia, Portugal, United Kingdom, France or Costa Rica.
Only a few days before the start of the competition, the wave forecast is very optimistic in Playa Hermosa, a location that expects to offer consistent waves for young surfers.
Trampoline of young talents
The Rip Curl GromSearch celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Created in Torquay (Australia) in 1999, it is an exclusive circuit for young surfers with their own identity that takes place simultaneously throughout the five continents. The champions of each country achieve the direct classification for the international final; a final that every year changes its location, faithful to its traditional philosophy "The Search" and always choosing for it a place of first level in the world surf map.
"Every year we always choose a new location for this international final," explains Mark Flanagan, competition director of the GromSearch circuit. "The goal is to provide small surfers with a platform to measure their skills in different waves around the world so that they gain experience before jumping to high level competition."
Previous editions of the event have crowned surfers who have subsequently entered the world top, Caroline Marks (USA), Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA), Owen Wright (AUS) or Nikki van Dijk ( AUS). Some like Gabriel Medina (BRA), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Tyler Wright (AUS) have even achieved the title of world champions.
Like every new edition, the Rip Curl GromSearch will return to our country. It will be in the month of September and will do so in Cantabrian and Basque waters during two consecutive weekends: from September 6 to 8 at the beach of Somo (Cantabria) and from 13 to 15 the beach of La Arena (Vizcaya). .
