Leeann Callaghan, a mother from Carndonagh, is urging bereaved parents to find support through upcoming local grief cafes. These drop-in events are organized by Anam Cara, an all-island organization dedicated to supporting parents who have lost a child.
The events are scheduled to take place at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel on May 14 and June 11, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. They are designed to offer a “lifeline” to parents, regardless of whether their loss is recent or occurred long ago.
A Personal Mission for Healing
Ms. Callaghan’s advocacy is rooted in her own experience following the sudden death of her eight-year-old son, Hugh Simpson Callaghan, in January 2011. She describes that period as the “darkest of times” for her family.

In honor of her son, the mother of seven now co-ordinates Hughie’s Corner, a child and adolescent therapeutic centre. Her children include Jonathan, 26, Jade, 25, Kiersha, 19, Seanice, 17, Sean, 15, and Meisha, 13.
Reflecting on the early days of her grief, Ms. Callaghan recalled being pregnant with her son Sean at the time of Hugh’s death, noting that she realized she was “only functioning.”
Creating a Safe Space for Parents
The grief cafes are intended to be a private environment where parents do not feel the need to pretend they are okay. Ms. Callaghan explained that many bereaved parents wear a “mask” in public, telling others they are fine before returning home to face their pain in private.
The sessions will be facilitated by grief counsellor Olive Morrissey, who holds a post-graduate qualification in children and loss with the Irish Hospice Foundation. There is no pressure on attendees to speak; they may simply sit in a room with others who understand their experience.
Anam Cara CEO Michelle Reynolds stated that the death of a child “changes everything in a parent’s world,” adding that the resulting grief is lifelong, unique, and often isolating.
Event Details and Registration
For the months of May and June, these grief cafes are being held in place of the charity’s usual parent support evenings in Letterkenny.
The events are free of charge. Parents wishing to register for the May 14 event can do so at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/1986988193174?aff=oddtdtcreator, and for the June 11 event at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/1988987328642?aff=oddtdtcreator.
Attendees may find that these specialized spaces help them avoid getting “stuck” in the trauma of their loss, potentially providing a pathway toward managing their lifelong grief.
