Bulgaria’s air ambulance service has chalked up another mission, this time transporting a critically ill 29-year-old woman from Blagoevgrad to Sofia. The young woman, who has slipped into a coma following an insidious stroke, is fighting for her life. This is the fifth such airlift to Blagoevgrad this year, underscoring the heightened usage of air medical services in Bulgaria.

Since its inception in June, Bulgaria’s air ambulance system has completed 43 missions, predominantly facilitating transfers between hospitals ("hospital to hospital" transfers). The youngest patient flown was a 4-year-old child, while the oldest was 92. In four instances, patients were airlifted directly from the location of their emergency to a medical facility.

While Bulgaria currently operates just one medical helicopter, two more are expected to join the fleet in the coming months. The second air ambulance, manufactured by Italian firm Leonardo, is set to arrive in February 2025, with the third slated for March 2025.

However, recent communications from Leonardo to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Health indicate potential delays due to critical shortages in key components required for the completion of the aircraft. According to the manufacturer, meeting the deadline is now at risk.

The current contract stipulates that the second and third helicopters should have been delivered by the end of June and December 2024, respectively.

Despite these setbacks, the existing air ambulance service continues to provide crucial support, as exemplified by today’s urgent mission. With each use, the value of Bulgaria’s air medical fleet becomes increasingly apparent.
