FC Twente Prepares for SC Freiburg Following Qarabag Blueprint
FC Twente is back in the main phase of a European competition this season after a one-year absence, playing at least six matches in the Conference League. The Tukkers have already finished two of those fixtures, defeating FC Thun 1-0 and cruising past Lincoln Red Imps 1-4, Twente Insite reported. These European commitments generate a significant amount of logistical work for the club surrounding both home and away matches.
The club secured its spot in the group stage in late August after a tense 1-4 victory over Qarabag FK in Azerbaijan. Because the turnaround was tight, teammanager Bart Bruins explained in the podcast Sinds 1965 that FC Twente reached out to Ajax for logistical intelligence. Ajax had traveled to the Azerbaijani club multiple times in a relatively short period, giving the Amsterdam side recent on-the-ground experience that Twente lacked.
We didn’t really have the time to do an inspection trip there, so we sailed along on the experiences of Ajax,
Bruins said in the podcast. He added that the club coordinated with Ajax’s travel agent to pinpoint the best training facilities and identify local pitfalls. Within the field you are enemies, but outside the field you try to help each other as much as possible,
Bruins noted.
Staff inspect hotels and pack bedding for trips
Under normal circumstances, FC Twente staff travel to foreign locations well in advance of a European away match to conduct rigorous site inspections. Team personnel examine every operational detail of the trip, down to the condition of the hotel facilities. You do pay attention to details, such as what the bathroom looks like,
Bruins said. The team takes proactive measures based on these findings, including packing their own bedding because local hotel pillows frequently fall short of player comfort standards.
On November 26, FC Twente travels to Germany for an away match against SC Freiburg, a fixture carrying high demand among traveling supporters. To smooth the path for fans and staff, security manager Thomas Lentelink reached out to domestic rivals FC Utrecht, who traveled to face Freiburg in last season’s Europa League.
We have contact with clubs in Netherlands,
Lentelink stated regarding the information-sharing initiative. We really try to pull the best practices from there. The same goes for Freiburg, where Utrecht already played last season. We also asked them: What are the dos and the don’ts?
