A recent digital media training center is taking shape at the historic Albuquerque Rail Yards in New Mexico. Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) is preparing to open the facility, constructed within the Rail Yards’ former boiler shop, to students in September.
A State-of-the-Art Facility
The approximately 10,000-square-foot space is the result of around three years of renovations and remodeling. Alan Trever, CNM’s department director of academic affairs, stated that the facility was designed based on direct input from potential employers, ensuring it meets the needs of evolving technology.
The center will feature three professional-grade sound stages, a state-of-the-art educational theater, and a recording studio. A makeup studio and costume shop are as well included. CNM Facilities Project Manager Adrianna Casas explained the purpose of the foley floor, noting its use in recording sounds like footsteps.
Collaboration and Future Growth
The $73 million facility is a collaborative effort between CNM, the city of Albuquerque, and the state. The New Mexico Media Arts Collective also plans to utilize the space for professional productions. Mateo Frazier, the Collective’s executive director, stated the goal is to attract smaller productions and provide students with opportunities to gain practical experience.
Construction is currently about 75% complete and is expected to be finished this fall. Two original cranes from the Rail Yards’ working past will remain as a visual reminder of the site’s history.
