Corona virus infections have now claimed around 5,000 lives worldwide. A total of 5,043 people died as a result of the infectious disease, according to a Friday AFP census. The number is based on the official information provided by the authorities in the individual countries. Johns Hopkins University had 4,981 fatalities.

According to the AFP, 3,176 people were killed in China, Italy and Iran. In Italy there were 1,016. The number of confirmed infections rose worldwide to 134,300, according to the university census even 135,382, which the number of those recovered indicated with 69,645. However, the figures from Johns Hopkins University should be treated with a certain caution with regard to their topicality: 302 cases of infection were still reported for Austria on Friday, the Ministry of Health reported 422 in the morning. In the afternoon there were 432. How many of these people is already known to have recovered is not known. According to AFP, 121 countries and regions are affected.

According to the latest information, 514 people died in Iran – an increase of 85 deaths within 24 hours, as the Ministry of Health in Tehran announced on Friday. The number of officially recorded infections with SARS-CoV-2 rose to 11,364 – 1,289 more than the previous day. Most infections were again in the capital, Tehran. At the same time, 3,529 infected patients were healed from the hospitals, said a spokesman on state television.

The corona crisis hits Iran shortly before the Persian New Year “Norus” (New Day) on March 20. Meanwhile, the senior Iranian leader’s foreign policy adviser has been quarantined on suspected infection. According to media reports, Ali-Akbar Welajati was diagnosed with signs of Covid 19 disease. He was therefore placed in quarantine as a precaution by his doctors. Welajati is one of the main advisors to leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is therefore considered one of the most influential politicians in Iran.
