CARACAS, Venezuela — A captain in the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) was tragically murdered in a daylight ambush today, as multiple assailants riddled his car with bullets in the bustling La Castellana neighborhood of Caracas.
The victim, identified as Darwin José Tarazona Prada, a 27-year-old captain serving in the GNB, was discovered lifeless inside his white Chery Orinoco sedan, bearing the license plate AF-229FG. The vehicle displayed multiple bullet holes, suggesting a brutal and coordinated attack.
Román Camacho, a prominent journalist covering crime and security, was the first to report the incident, sharing details on his social media accounts. According to Camacho, investigators from the Scientific, Penal, and Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC) have begun examining the scene at the chaotic La Castellana distributor on the Cota Mil highway, a major thoroughfare in the nation’s capital.
Sources close to the investigation revealed to Camacho that the lethal shots were fired from inside the victim’s car, casting initial suspicion on an inside job or a targeted hit. The motive behind the ambush remains unclear at this early stage of the probe.
Tarazona, a GNB captain, was on duties at the time of his untimely demise and was attached to the military’s headquarters in El Paraíso, Caracas.
The captain’s body was subsequently transported to the Bello Monte headquarters of the National Forensic Medicine and Science Service (SENAMECF) for further examination and identification processes.
The sheer brazenness of the attack has sparked conversations about insecurity and impunity in Venezuela. As authorities scramble to unravel the motives and determine the perpetrators, Caracassinos grapple with the dangerous reality on their city’s streets.
