AMD has confirmed that its desktop Socket AM5 platform will receive official support through at least 2029+, according to announcements made at the company’s Advancing AI event. According to the company’s roadmap, the platform—which debuted in 2022 alongside Ryzen 7000 processors—will host upcoming Zen 6 and Zen 7 architectures before transitioning to Socket AM6 with Zen 8 and DDR6 memory.
Socket AM5 Lifecycle Confirmed Through Zen 7
The Socket AM5 infrastructure will remain active for multiple upcoming processor generations, according to AMD’s published roadmap. First launched with Ryzen 7000 series chips, AM5 has since supported Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 9000 processors. The next phase introduces Zen 6 architecture, codenamed Olympic Ridge, with desktop variants expected in the first half of 2027 following server-focused EPYC Venice releases. Following Zen 6, the Zen 7 architecture will debut on servers as EPYC Florence in 2028 before coming to desktop platforms in 2029. Built on advanced manufacturing nodes expected to be TSMC’s A16 or A14, Zen 7 chips will feature new AI instruction extensions known as ACE.

Users will retain compatibility with existing AM5 motherboards through the Zen 7 generation because the architecture maintains a DDR5 memory controller, alongside support for faster technologies like LPDDR5X and MRDIMM, according to company disclosures. A major platform shift will occur with the arrival of the Zen 8 architecture, planned for 2030 and beyond. Zen 8, featuring the server-side Ravenna family, will initiate the AM6 platform era. AM6 will introduce native support for DDR6 memory and PCIe 6.0 buses, ending a nearly seven-year lifespan for Socket AM5 that allows for multi-generation CPU upgrades without mandatory motherboard replacements.
