Angela Bassett will be honored with the Excellence in the Arts Award at the 8th American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors on February 16. The award recognizes her nearly 40-year career as an actress, director, and executive producer.
A Career Spanning Decades
Bassett’s work includes iconic roles in film and television. She portrayed Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X (1992), Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), and Bernadine Harris in Waiting to Exhale (1995). More recently, she appeared as Queen Ramonda in Marvel’s Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Her television work includes Emmy-nominated performances in Jacksons: An American Dream (1992), The Rosa Parks Story (2002), American Horror Story, and 9-1-1.
Recognition of Excellence
“Angela Bassett is the embodiment of excellence,” said Nice Crowd CEO Jeff Friday and President Nicole Friday. They further stated her work is “extraordinary and enduring,” and that she has “set a standard for artistic integrity and cultural impact.”
The ABFF Honors will also recognize Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with the Entertainment Icon Award, Jennifer Hudson with the Renaissance Award, Salli Richardson-Whitfield with the Evolution Award, and Damson Idris with the Horizon Award. A tribute will also be paid to the team behind Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
The event, hosted by comedian KevOnStage, will be held at the SLS hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and will be a private, non-televised affair.
