Power Outage Protest: Residents Demand License Revocation for Bulgaria’s Energo-Pro

In a growing show of discontent, residents of Gabrovo municipality have launched an online petition calling for the revocation of the license of Energo-Pro to deliver electricity in the region. The initiative comes after more than 90 settlements in the Gabrovo area were left without power during the Christmas holidays, with some outages lasting over three days.

The affected areas include the neighborhoods of Lyutak, Voynov, Shenini, Gorni and Dolni Bakoyci, Kraykovci, Belentsi, and Stoykovci, as well as numerous villages located south of Gabrovo. Teams from Energo-Pro have been working to resolve the issue, but many residents have expressed frustration with the length of time it’s taking to restore power.

The petition, started by Petko Koychev, a resident of the village of Sobotkovci, blames the frequent power outages on Energo-Pro’s lack of investment in infrastructure and inadequate maintenance of power lines. Koychev argued that the company has failed to fulfill its obligations, leaving many residents, including the elderly and tourist businesses, in the dark during the cold winter months.

The online petition can be signed here.

Meanwhile, local news outlet Zagabrovo reported that numerous complaints and signals have been filed with Energo-Pro and the municipality, with ‘Za Gabrovo’ sending specific questions to Energo-Pro and KERV, seeking clarification on the situation.

The online petition and the ongoing power outages have raised serious concerns among residents, who are urging Energo-Pro and the relevant authorities to take immediate action to resolve the issue and prevent future occurrences.

In response to an earlier question about the potential impact of the revocation of the license of ‘Toplofikatsiya-Gabrovo’ EAD on Energo-Pro’s ability to provide electricity, Energo-Pro stated that they had received sufficient assurances from the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) regarding the continued stable supply of electricity to Gabrovo. They also mentioned that the installed capacity of electricity distribution stations in Gabrovo provides ample reserve capacity to cover any additional demand resulting from customers switching to electric heating.

However, with the ongoing power outages and residents’ growing frustration, it remains to be seen how Energo-Pro will address these concerns and work towards improving the reliability of the electrical supply in the Gabrovo region.

As the situation continues to unfold, ‘Za Gabrovo’ will keep its readers informed about any updates or developments in the power outage issue and the potential impact on the local community.
