Apple is currently testing updated processors for its compact desktop lineup to bolster performance. The company is evaluating the Mac mini with both the M5 Pro and M6 processors, while the Mac Studio is being developed to utilize the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. AppleInsider has been tracking long shipping lead times, and has been doing so all year.

Supply chain pressure has led to extended shipping lead times for existing hardware. Base-model Mac Studio units currently face delivery windows of 10 to 12 weeks, while higher-tier configurations extend to 13 to 14 weeks. These delivery dates have been steadily lengthening since at least March 2026, as AI firms buy up most available processors and RAM. Costs are going up for Apple, so they rose for buyers too, and may well continue until the AI boom recedes or manufacturing matches demand.

Future Integration of OLED Display Technology

Beyond internal processing power, Apple is working to integrate OLED display technology across its Mac range. Apple added an OLED screen to the iPad Pro back in 2024, and the technology provides brighter images, more accurate colors, and higher contrast. While Apple is working to add OLED to all of its devices, it seemingly didn’t prove to be the hit the company expected with the iPad Pro. Nonetheless, the higher quality and lower power consumption would make OLED ideal, but for the cost and the complexity of developing the panels.

Consequently, no Macs have OLED displays yet, but the MacBook Pro is predicted to get one by late 2026 or perhaps early 2027. It is considered certain that the MacBook Pro will get this technology before the consumer iMac. The iMac is also planned to eventually receive an OLED screen, though it is further in the future than the other Macs. While some rumors have predicted this could occur by 2029 or 2030, the current reports do not back up that specific timescale, only noting that it is further out.

Broader Hardware Ecosystem Adjustments

AirPods lineup revamp and design updates

Apple’s strategy also extends to its audio lineup, with previous reports indicating a push to consolidate and update the AirPods family. According to unnamed sources speaking to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple planned to revamp its AirPods lineup, including a new entry-level model in 2024 and a Pro model in 2025. The company also planned to update the design of the earbuds, their cases, and audio quality. A new version of the AirPods Max headphones was also slated for a 2024 release, with new colors available.

Because the third-generation AirPods did not perform as well as expected, with consumers often opting for either the second-generation model or the high-end Pro model, Apple planned to phase out both the second and third-generation AirPods in favor of two fourth-generation models. These models were designed to feature a blend of elements from the third-generation AirPods and the Pro model. The higher-end version was intended to include noise cancellation and an updated charging case equipped with speakers for Find My alerts. Both new models were set to switch to USB-C for their charging cases, in line with the company’s broader shift away from Lightning ports.

As the company continues to press ahead with new designs, it remains unclear whether they will be economical. Announcement dates and release timetables remain fluid, as shipping dates for the hardware are dependent on the chip shortage. Apple is clearly working on ways to make buying expensive devices easier while navigating a market where consumers do not upgrade their headphones or earphones often unless it is due to battery life, or they lose an AirPod.
