Apple is set to launch its long-awaited smart home hub, codenamed J490, on October 13. The device features a 6-inch display and an iMac G4-inspired design, marking a major push into the connected-home market under Chief Executive Officer John Ternus.
The upcoming product lineup, anchored by the tabletop hub, aims to give users a dedicated control panel for connected devices, media playback, and video calls.
Hardware Design and the iMac G4 Influence
The central hub, widely referred to as the HomePad, centers around a nearly square 6-inch display. According to reports from Bloomberg, the tabletop version draws direct visual inspiration from the iconic iMac G4, featuring a hemispherical base and a free-floating screen that can be adjusted for viewing.
Internally designated as project J490, the device has moved past internal lab testing and has been distributed to a large number of employees for home testing. In addition to the tabletop model with a base resembling half of a HomePod mini, Apple is considering a second version designed to be mounted on a wall.
Siri AI Integration and Software Interface
The software interface bridges multiple operating system environments, combining elements of iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Users will move through the interface via widgets, watch-face-style views, and a dedicated home screen layout tailored for fast interaction.
Siri AI serves as the primary interaction method, designed to search across multiple apps and user accounts rather than restricting functions to basic smart-home commands. The device features a built-in speaker allowing it to double as a HomePod, alongside a front camera equipped for user recognition to tailor displayed information such as calendars, notes, music, and podcasts to the person standing in front of it. The system relies on standard camera recognition rather than the 3D technology used in Face ID.
Companion Products Launching on October 13
The J490 hub will not debut alone. Apple plans to introduce a refreshed HomePod mini and a new Apple TV model on the same date. While both devices retain their familiar external designs, they pack faster chips built to accommodate enhanced Siri AI capabilities. The HomePod mini is also scheduled to debut in fresh color options, including pink and green.
Retail expansions are already underway to support the hardware push. Apple has been increasing the floor space dedicated to smart-home displays across its retail stores, aligning HomePod, Apple TV, HomeKit, and next-generation AI services under a unified retail experience.
