Chaos Erupts in Netherlands on New Year’s Eve: Violence, Arson, and Fireworks Mishaps
New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Netherlands took a turn for the worse, with a series of incidents including arson, vandalism, violence, and fireworks mishaps. The Dutch police have confirmed the arrest of at least 200 individuals, according to their official statement.
"Instead of a joyous evening for many, New Year’s Eve once again descended into a night of destruction and violence," said Dutch Police Chief, Jenni Nol. "Law enforcement officers and other individuals who swiftly responded to ensure safe celebrations were targeted and attacked. It’s distressing that our New Year’s Eve was marred by so many incidents, some quite severe."
Special police units were deployed in cities like Amsterdam, Breda, The Hague, Groningen, Zaandam, Rotterdam, and Harlem to maintain order. In the city of dwellings, police were forced to use tear gas to disperse rioters. In Amsterdam, officers had to fire warning shots after coming under attack.
Several incidents involved mishandled pyrotechnics. Cars were set ablaze in multiple cities. In Rotterdam, a 14-year-old boy died in a powerful fireworks explosion. Many others were severely injured across various cities. Chief Nol stressed the danger of powerful fireworks, stating, "We’re essentially dealing with explosives with unprecedented impact. I don’t understand why people possess and use them, taking risks that are intolerable for both themselves and others."
Incidents of muggings and shootings were also reported in certain cities. Police received several reports of thefts around the Dam Square in Amsterdam. Preliminary data suggests over 200 people were arrested for public disorder offenses, vandalism, violence, public drunkenness, and assaults. Last year, over 200 arrests were initially reported, with the figure later climbing to 747.
