Arjun Aravind Charged with Murder of Mother and Brother in Acton

Arjun Aravind, 17, appeared in Concord District Court on Thursday morning where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf, according to CBS News. Prosecutors state that the defendant killed his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, inside their home on Martha Lane earlier in the week.

Officers arrived at the property at approximately 6:37 p.m. and discovered both victims dead inside. Investigators located the younger brother on the first floor and the mother in the finished basement. Early Wednesday morning, police officers in Wayland responding to an unrelated business alarm spotted the Accord parked outside, with Aravind sitting inside the vehicle. Officers took him into custody without incident, recovering items inside the car that authorities later tied to the crime scene.

Before his arraignment on the murder charges in Concord, Aravind appeared briefly Wednesday afternoon in Lowell Juvenile Court to face motor vehicle theft charges. Because the juvenile court does not have jurisdiction over the murder and assault charges, the case transferred to district court. During Thursday’s proceeding, the judge ordered the 17-year-old held without bail.

Defense attorney Debra DeWit did not contest the no-bail order during Thursday’s court session, describing the event as obviously an unimaginable, horrible situation. Outside the courthouse, DeWit told reporters that her client did not realize they were dead when he left the residence and remained in a state of shock, requesting a psychiatric evaluation for the teenager.

Both Aravind and his younger brother attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. The school district released a statement expressing profound grief over the incident and deployed grief counselors and support teams to assist students and staff.
