Mexican authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of magistrate Edmundo Román Pinzón, who served as president of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia (TSJ) in Guerrero.
Omar García Harfuch, head of the Mexican Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), announced the arrest via his X social media account on Sunday, January 5. Although he did not reveal the suspect’s name, García Harfuch stated that the individual was detained in conjunction with the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) and various security agencies, including SEDENA, SEMAR, GN, and the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
The arrest comes nearly a month after the fatal shooting of Edmundo Román Pinzón on December 11, 2024, in Acapulco. The magistrate was gunned down as he exited the juzgados de Caleta.Authorities confirmed that they were investigating the homicide as a case of aggravated homicide.户The SSPC reported that the arrested suspect was found in possession of 20 packets believed to contain crystal, and that he is allegedly a member of a criminal cell operating in Acapulco.
In late December 2024, the Guerrero FGE announced the capture and indictment of two individuals suspected of involvement in the magistrate’s murder. The suspects, Luis Gerardo "N" and Diana "N", were reportedly responsible for the shooting and the cover-up efforts, with Diana "N" acting as an accomplice.
Following the attack, images of the magistrate’s vehicle, riddled with bullet holes, circulated on social media. Guerrero governor Evelyn Salgado condemned the murder and urged the state’s FGE to conduct a thorough investigation.
The arrest of the latest suspect is part of the ongoing efforts by Mexican authorities to bring the masterminds and perpetrators of the magistrate’s murder to justice.
