Police have carried out significant enforcement actions following a large-scale group bike ride across west Auckland over the weekend, citing a “complete disregard for others” by some participants.
The event, which took place on Sunday, was organized via social media and attracted approximately 120 riders. According to Acting Inspector Damian Albert, the group traveled from Henderson to New Lynn and back, starting at 11 a.m. And concluding by 2 p.m.
Enforcement Action and Penalties
Authorities monitored the group’s behavior throughout the ride to address road safety violations and anti-social conduct. This monitoring resulted in the following actions:
- Four people were arrested.
- One vehicle was impounded.
- 53 infringement notices were issued.
Acting Inspector Damian Albert expressed disappointment that a portion of the participants disobeyed road rules. “We had units monitoring the behaviour of the riders to be able to take appropriate enforcement action against those who chose not to follow road safety rules or engaged in any other anti-social behaviour along the way,” he stated.
Significance and Road Safety
The scale of the enforcement action underscores the police department’s stance on public safety and the disruption caused by unregulated group events on public roads. Police noted that they attempted to minimize the impact on commuters during the three-hour window.
The severity of the response is intended to serve as a deterrent. “These riders showed a complete disregard for others on the road, and we will continue to hold them to account and impound their bikes,” Albert said. He added that police hope these actions “send a strong message about the seriousness of road safety.”
