Title: Driver Reveals Chilling Details of Klepp Shooting, Seeks Mental Health Debate
In a bombshell interview with Stavanger Aftenblad, the 50-year-old man at the center of the Klepp shooting tragedy has spoken publicly for the first time, recounting the terrifying events and calling for a broader debate on mental health.
The man, who has not been named to protect his privacy, drove off with Geir Roald Hodne (41), who was later shot dead by police. The drama unfolded after Hodne, who was armed and behaving erratically, forced his way into the 50-year-old’s home, allegedly threatening to burn it down and harm his children.
"He showed up with a pistol," the driver told the newspaper. "I was shocked, but I didn’t want him to leave my kids exposed to this danger. I had to get him out of there, even if it meant taking him for a drive."
In a chilling account, the driver detailed his desperate attempts to reason with Hodne, disarm him, and alert authorities. He claims Hodne took his phone and threw it away, then pointed the pistol at him. During a stop at a convenience store, the driver managed to palm the gun’s ammunition.
"We drove around, and I tried to convince him to hand over the pistol. I also tried to find a quiet spot where I could call the police," he recalled.
As they drove, the driver asked his teenage son to call the police. However, Hodne fired the first shot, setting off a fatal exchange of gunfire with police.
"I didn’t want to leave him alone, even though I knew it was dangerous. I wanted to try and help him, but in the end, I had to prioritize my own family’s safety," the driver said, expressing profound regret and grief.
The driver was arrested and later released, while Hodne was shot and killed by police. Two other officers were also injured in the shootout.
Hodne’s lawyer, Hans Marius Danielsen Thorsnæs, said he would consider pursuing further investigations into Hodne’s mental health following the interview. "Based on the information that has come to light in this case, I will assess whether there is a need for further investigative steps to clarify the circumstances surrounding my client’s mental state," he said.
The incident has sparked widespread shock and grief in the tight-knit community of Klepp, and across Norway. The driver’s call for greater awareness of mental health issues adds a poignant note to an already tragic tale.
