Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown is reviewing security arrangements for his home and office following a physical altercation at a political fundraiser last month. A spokesperson for the mayor confirmed that a man “took a swing” at Brown during the event for National’s Auckland Central candidate Candace Kinser, prompting the mayor to seek enhanced protective measures.
Security Review Follows Physical Confrontation
The incident occurred while Mayor Brown was attending the fundraiser alongside his wife. According to a spokesperson for the mayor, the encounter involved an individual who was “physically threatening and aggressive.” The mayor’s office has explicitly rejected any suggestion that Brown initiated the altercation. While the mayor described the event as “incredibly disappointing,” his office stated that he remains committed to attending public functions moving forward.
The mayor’s team noted that this confrontation is part of a broader trend, stating that “occasionally and increasingly, some members of the public are behaving aggressively and in a threatening way” toward the mayor. As a direct consequence of the event, the mayor and his family are now exploring additional security protocols for both their private residence and the mayor’s professional workspace.
Tensions Between the Mayor and Lobbying Groups
A spokesperson for the mayor characterized “threatening sentiment” from such lobbying groups as “problematic” and called for it to stop.
Josh van Veen, speaking for the Auckland Ratepayers Alliance, dismissed the suggestion that his organization’s political criticism contributed to the violence as “bizarre.” Van Veen urged police to investigate the incident, emphasizing that “violence has no place in our democracy.” He further stated that allegations of violence against the mayor, or any member of the public, should be treated with seriousness and that those responsible must be held to account.
