Late August provides a final seasonal opportunity to view constellations like Scorpius, which features a distinct hook-shaped line of stars. On Aug. 20, the red star Antares—the heart of the scorpion—will appear directly next to the moon just after sunset in the southern sky near the horizon. Scorpius sits bordered by Libra on the west and Sagittarius on the east.
Running alongside the scorpion’s tail is the Milky Way, visible as a cloudy ribbon stretching from north to south. “It’s pretty cool. For anybody who’s never seen the Milky Way, this is a really good month to give it a shot,” Fried said. “If you’re not finding it from New York City, drag a friend with a car or find a way to get out of the city.”
