MELBOURNE — Gemma O’Toole, a Melbourne woman, arrived at Melbourne Airport on Sunday night, becoming the first of 11 Australians released by Israeli authorities to return home following the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.

O’Toole was met by her parents, Dr. Suzie O’Toole, and Dr. Patrick Keyzer, along with more than 100 supporters. She alleged that she and approximately 480 activists were subjected to physical, mental, and sexual abuse after being intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on May 18 while traveling with the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The incident gained international attention after Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, published video footage showing detainees zip-tied and kneeling. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the actions as “not in line with Israel’s values and norms,” he also described the flotilla’s mission as an “unnecessary provocation.”

Allegations of Mistreatment

O’Toole stated that the footage released by the minister represented only an “infinitesimal amount” of what the detainees experienced. In a video posted to the Free Gaza Australia Instagram account, O’Toole alleged she was strip-searched multiple times and physically assaulted by guards. She further reported that detainees were sleep-deprived as they were frequently woken by guards throughout the night.

These accounts stand in direct opposition to comments made by Israel’s Australian ambassador, Hillel Newman. Last week, Newman told the ABC’s 7.30 program that “no one was hurt” during the interception and “refuted completely” allegations of sexual humiliation or violence. In response, O’Toole noted that she had visited five of the approximately 80 activists currently hospitalized in Turkey, citing injuries including broken vertebrae, broken legs, a fractured sternum, and a collapsed lung.

Government and Diplomatic Response

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has publicly condemned the treatment of the detainees, calling the video of the event “shocking and unacceptable.” The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) summoned the Israeli ambassador to Australia to convey the government’s displeasure and reiterate the call for the release of all detained Australians.

In addition to O’Toole, the Australian activists involved in the mission include Juliet and Isla Lamont, Zack Schofield, Surya McEwen, Dr. Bianca Webb-Pullman, Anny Mokotow, Neve Barwick O’Connor, Sam Woripa Watson, Violet Coco, and Helen O’Sullivan.

Significance and Outlook

The return of the activists has intensified local pressure on the federal government. O’Toole’s parents have publicly demanded an audience with the prime minister, seeking further action against Israel. Dr. Patrick Keyzer stated, “If that is what they are prepared to do to Australians, on camera, imagine what they are doing to Palestinians who are locked up for years and years and years.”

As the remaining Australians are processed and potentially return home, It’s likely that the diplomatic friction between Canberra and Israel will continue. Analysts may expect the families of the detainees to maintain pressure on the Australian government to pursue further investigations into the conditions of their detention, while the conflicting accounts regarding the safety of the activists remain a point of significant contention in bilateral relations.
