VIENNA, Jan 7 – In the wake of Austria‘s presidential order to commence government formation, FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria) chairman Herbert Kickl has expressed openness to coalition talks with the conservative ÖVP (Austrian People’s Party), setting forth conditions for the potential partnership.

At his first press conference following President Alexander Van der Bellen’s mandate, Kickl declared his intention to propose ÖVP coalition negotiations to the FPÖ’s executive board. "I am holding out my hand to the ÖVP," Kickl stated, suggesting that initial talks would be held in a small setting to establish fundamental principles and objectives.

Should the FPÖ’s board approve the move, Kickl will initiate contact with ÖVP leadership. He expressed urgency, stating, "We need swift clarity on whether a new type of coalition with the ÖVP is feasible."

However, Kickl outlined non-negotiable prerequisites for any successful ÖVP-FPÖ coalition. These include a shared commitment to "honest politics," warning the ÖVP against "playing games, tricks, sabotage, or obstruction." Notably, the ÖVP has signaled readiness to discuss a government coalition with the FPÖ.

In a provocative address, Kickl cautioned that new elections could be on the horizon if ÖVP proves unwilling to meet his demands. Having widened its lead over ÖVP and the social democratic SPÖ since the last parliamentary election, the FPÖ appears increasingly confident in its electoral prospects.

Criticizing the outgoing ÖVP-Green government, Kickl accused it of driving Austria into a fiscal hole and vowed to restore public trust in politics. However, he remained guarded about policy specifics, declining to discuss particular projects and barring questions during the press appearance.

As Austria’s political landscape shifts, Kickl could carved out a historic legacy, becoming the country’s first FPÖ chancellor. Though he dismissed suggestions of personal ambition, he acknowledged that voters now tasked him with accepting the responsibility.
