The 2026 edition of the competition is centered on the theme “Deep Roots. The initiative specifically targets sectors including Artificial Intelligence, AgriTech, HealthTech, Clean Energy, and Water Technology. The organization aims to foster solutions that are rooted in African market realities while maintaining global relevance.
Who is eligible to apply?
Participation is open to women founders or co-founders who are at least 18 years old and are citizens, residents, or registered business operators within an African country. While mixed-gender teams may apply, AWIEF requires that the official pitch presenter be a woman co-founder. The competition is divided into three tracks based on business maturity:
- Idea Track: For pre-venture founders with a prototype and less than 18 months of operation.
- Startup Track: For early-stage businesses with active customers, revenue, and an operating history of six months to three years.
- Scale-Up Track: For growth-stage companies with over $500,000 in revenue or institutional funding, and operations spanning at least two African countries.
What is the competition timeline?
The selection process is structured to conclude with live finals in November. Following the June 22 application deadline, AWIEF will conduct a screening process to narrow the field to 70 ventures. A six-session training bootcamp is scheduled for August, followed by a first-round judging phase in early September. By September 20, 2026, the organization plans to announce 12 finalists who will then undergo mentorship and pitch preparation. The final event is set to take place during the AWIEF 2026 Conference on November 10–11.

Selected entrepreneurs may receive expert mentorship, business training, and exposure to investors and stakeholders. Finalists are set to receive travel support to attend the conference finals, where they will pitch to industry leaders for potential cash prizes.
