Ukraine‘s New Ambassador to Germany: A Shuffling of Diplomatic Chairs
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a change in leadership at its embassy in Germany. The current Ambassador, Andriy Melnyk, will be replaced, potentially by the incumbent Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, reports 24tv.ua citing Bild.
The official reason for the move is routine diplomatic rotation. However, as with many political decisions, there’s often more to the story behind the scenes.
Melnyk, who served as Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany for seven years before taking the helm in Brazil, was known for publicly and systematically criticizing Melnyk’s tenure. While this criticism may have influenced the decision, it’s unclear whether it was the determining factor, especially with a new Foreign Minister, Andrei Sibiga, now at the helm.
Melnyk will continue to represent Ukraine’s interests in Germany until February 2025.
In related news, President Zelenskyy recently mandated new ambassadors for Ukraine in China, Lithuania, Hungary, and several other countries, publishing decrees of dismissal for the existing envoys before announcing the appointments.
