The Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a $20.5 billion contract for the Blue Line Metro Project to a Turkish-Chinese consortium, comprising Mapa, Limak, and CRRC. The announcement was made by Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and chairman of the board of executives of the RTA, during a press conference held at The One & Only Royal Mirage Hotel in Dubai.
The Blue Line project, spanning 30 kilometers with a total of 14 stations, is the longest metro line in the world without a driver, and is expected to be operational by September 2029. The project is a key component of Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, aiming to make Dubai the city with the best quality of life in the world.
The project includes a 15.5-kilometer underground stretch and a 14.5-kilometer elevated track, connecting key areas such as Dubai Festival City, Dubai Marina, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Dubai Academic City. It will also include an iconic station at Dubai Creek Harbour designed by the renowned architectural firm SOM, capable of handling up to 160,000 passengers per day by 2040.
The RTA expects the project to generate significant economic, social, and environmental benefits, with a nett present value of $56.5 billion by 2040. It is expected to reduce travel time by 20%, increase property values by 25%, and decrease carbon emissions by 254,000 metric tons per year.
Mohammed Naguib Johan, chairman of Mapa, expressed the consortium’s excitement for the project, stating, "We are excited to be partnering with the RTA to deliver this iconic project. We are committed to meeting the highest standards of quality and safety, while ensuring the project is delivered on time and within budget."
The project is a milestone in Dubai’s metro system, which currently has 78 stations and is the longest driverless metro network in the world. Upon completion of the Blue Line, the total length of Dubai’s metro network will reach 131 kilometers, with 168 trains serving 78 stations.
As the project progresses, the RTA will continue to update the public on its developments, ensuring transparency and public engagement in the process.
