Fast boat operators in Bali face heightened safety checks as port authorities enforce regular emergency drills, while travelers navigating the island’s high season encounter heavily booked routes and packed harbors. According to the Head of Benoa Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP), Aprianus Hangki, port officials are actively verifying that vessel operators adhere to standard operating procedures to reduce the risk of loss of life.
Safety Standards and Port Authority Oversight at Benoa Harbour
With Benoa Harbour now functioning as the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub, port leaders are calling on fast boat service providers and all other vessel operators to conduct regular accident handling simulations across South Bali ports. According to Aprianus Hangki, Head of Benoa KSOP, tourist ship operators regularly conduct these drills as a form of crew preparedness, and port officials check that standard operating procedures are strictly followed.
“Our focus is on how operators ensure the seaworthiness of their vessels,” Hangki told reporters, explaining that these simulations make ship crews more competent and skilled in handling emergency situations. Drills operate in alignment with the international regulation SOLAS 1974 (Safety of Life at Sea) and are carried out at least once a month to improve crew skills and alertness.
At Benoa Port alone, around 79 units of tourist boat fleets operate every day for tourist transportation. Hangki noted that 100 percent of operators have complied with requirements, stating that officials maintain zero tolerance and no compromises on safety and regulations.
Fast Boat Routes, Traffic Relief, and Island Access
Fast boats serve as vital transportation links connecting tourists to destinations such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, the Gili Islands, and Lombok. While traveling by fast boat is the only way to access Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan, operators have also established routes to help travelers bypass heavy island traffic.
GoBoat operates a water taxi-style service with dozens of daily departures between Canggu and Uluwatu, as well as a similar service operating between Canggu and Jimbaran. While driving from Canggu to Uluwatu takes at least 90 minutes when traffic is free-flowing and can reach upwards of four hours during peak congestion, the GoBoat fast boat service cuts travel time down to 35 minutes.
High Season Booking Advice and Harbor Alternatives
During Bali’s busy high season, tourists are encouraged to book fast boat tickets in advance. Popular routes frequently sell out ahead of time, making advance booking essential for travelers with fixed itineraries or those traveling in groups.
Because boats and ports operate at high volumes during peak periods, advance ticket holders generally experience smoother transitions through queues managed by port teams. While most travelers heading to neighboring islands pass through Sanur Harbor, tourists can also consider Benoa, Serangan, or Padangbai Harbor. Using these alternative ports can help visitors avoid the peak congestion of Sanur Harbor while offering a chance to explore more of Bali.
