Jusuf Hamka’s Background
Born on December 5, 1957, as Jauw A Loen or Alun Joseph, Jusuf Hamka is the fourth of seven children from a moderate Chinese family. He converted to Islam in 1981 at age 23, a decision influenced by Buya Hamka. Before his success in the toll road industry, he worked as a street vendor, a timber businessman, and a tractor operator for a construction project earning Rp 750,000 per month.
