Bandung‘s Dark Side: Singaporean Tourist Allegedly Molested During New Year’s Eve Celebrations

In an unfortunate turn of events that marred the otherwise lively New Year’s Eve celebrations in Bandung, a Singaporean tourist is believed to have been a victim of molestation. The incident, which took place in the bustling Braga area of Bandung, West Java, on December 31, 2024, has been widely discussed on social media and has reached the attention of local authorities.

The Bandung City Administration is taking the matter seriously and is actively coordinating with the Regional Police to identify and apprehend the culprits involved. "We’re committed to handling this case efficiently. We’re working closely with the police to ensure timely apprehension of the perpetrators," said Rasdian Setiadi, Head of Banda City’s Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), as quoted by detikJabar.

Kepala Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Kota Bandung, Arief Syaifudin, also extended his apology for the incident and reassured tourists of the city’s commitment to their safety and comfort. "We’re truly sorry if this incident disrupted the holidays of our visitors. Ensuring the safety and comfort of our visitors is our top priority," he stated.

The victim, Joanna, uploaded a video detailing the incident on her shared YouTube channel, ‘Darien & Joanna’. In the video, she expressed her faith in Indonesia’s goodness, having experienced four months of kindness and warmth, but emphasized the need for justice. "I’m 99% sure most Indonesians are kind and amazing. But this person must be caught. Not one woman should suffer sexual harassment and stay silent about it," she said.

The video, which has gone viral, clearly shows the faces of the men believed to be involved in the harassment. It depicts Joanna and Darien, her companion, being followed by a group of young men while vlogging in Braga. Joanna can be seen looking back at the men and warning Darien of their actions.

Darien, in the video, expressed his disgust at the incident, stating, "This is disgusting. This does not represent the culture of Indonesia that we’ve come to know. Show the world that Indonesia has proper laws, lock them up."

Reflecting on the incident, Darien added, "You can’t just harass women on the street and walk away like that. Put them behind bars."

In light of this incident, it is important for tourists to remain vigilant during their travels, and for local authorities to ensure the safety and security of all visitors. The people of Bandung, known for their warmth and hospitality, should not be tarnished by the actions of a few.
