A fire at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar and restaurant in Bangkok killed 30 people and injured approximately 70 others on July 12. According to the Bangkok Post, the blaze caused a sudden explosion and total power failure, claiming the lives of two members of the performing cover band, Tosakan.
Chaos and Explosion at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. on July 12. Band leader Athipat “Ice” Wijarn told reporters that the venue went pitch-black as the power failed, filling the space with thick smoke. Shortly after Wijarn reached the exit, an explosion erupted, spraying flames into the street.
The casualties include keyboardist Kwang and singer Breeze, both members of the 11-person cover band Tosakan. Two other band members suffered injuries, including Wijarn, who sustained a head injury, and the drummer, who was reported to be in critical condition.
Did you know? The band Tosakan consists of 11 members who perform a mix of Thai and international cover songs.
Survivor Accounts: Mistaking Fire for Stage Effects
Survivors described a confusing initial onset where smoke was mistaken for theatrical effects. Bassist Anan “Tor” Prasert, 37, told reporters he initially thought the smoke was just part of the stage production. He only realized the danger when smoke began pouring from the ceiling.
Prasert reported that he ripped out his jack cable and fled the building with his bass guitar still slung over his shoulder. He sustained minor burns during the escape.
The Warning Signs and Delayed Reaction
Athipat Wijarn expressed regret over his delayed reaction to the smoke. He admitted to reporters that the venue had experienced power outages in the past due to electrical problems, leading him to assume the initial blackout was another glitch.

Wijarn recounted that the keyboard player spotted the smoke first and shouted for him to run. Despite shouting for his girlfriend, Breeze, the darkness and smoke made it impossible to find her before the explosion occurred.
Casualty Toll and Recovery Efforts
Authorities confirmed that around 70 people suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. On July 13, the scene remained grim, with flowers left on a partially melted electric keyboard and a burnt effects pedal board lying on the pavement.
The band spent much of July 13 searching for a fifth member, a singer named Din. In a social media post, the band confirmed that Din had been found, though they asked for patience while awaiting an update on his condition.
Safety Note: In venues with frequent electrical glitches, the risk of fire increases. Always identify the nearest emergency exit immediately upon entering a public space.
