Belgium‘s Health Ministry Advises Masks for Public Places Amid Viral Surge
The Belgian Ministry of Health has urged everyone experiencing symptoms of a respiratory infection to wear a face mask in crowded areas. Several viruses, including the flu, are currently circulating widely across Belgium, leading to increased pressure on hospitals, GPs, and care homes.
With the warning level now at code orange, the second-highest level, the health ministry advises individuals with symptoms to wear a mask while using public transportation or interacting with healthcare workers. The use of masks is strongly recommended but not mandatory.
"Staying home is the best course of action for those who are sick," said Belgium’s chief medical adviser. "Once you’re feeling better, you can return to work, but it’s wise to continue wearing a mask for at least five days after symptom onset."
In addition to mask-wearing, the ministry emphasizes the importance of regular hand washing, coughing into the elbow or a paper towel, and proper room ventilation to prevent the spread of viruses.
