Bert Keizer, Dutch Author, on Euthanasia and Death: ‘Dying is Like Falling Asleep’

Bert Keizer, a prominent Dutch author and historian known for his ALS advocacy and books on medical subjects, has passed away. The 77-year-old author, who underwent euthanasia, leaves behind a profound reflection on death and the choices surrounding it.

In his final interview, Keizer likened death to falling asleep, a sentiment that echoes in his written works. "Dying is just like falling asleep," he said, "We die every night, and one night, it’s the final sleep."

Keizer’s openness about his decision to end his life has sparked conversations about euthanasia and end-of-life choices. Although he was not suffering from a terminal illness, he chose to end his life after years of living with a chronic neurological condition.

The author, who had ALS, advocated for euthanasia under the Netherlands’ right-to-die laws. He believed in the power of personal choice and the right to determine one’s final moments.

Keizer’s latest book, "De dood met zijn handen retailer" (Facing Death Head-On), was published posthumously. In it, he explores the societal taboos surrounding death and euthanasia, urging readers to confront and understand these topics.

His passing serves as a reminder of the complex and personal nature of end-of-life decisions. As Keizer put it, "Death is not the end. It’s the final sleep. And everyone deserves a peaceful night."
