The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) trained salt focal persons from across the country on the Salt Information Management System (SIMS). The training, held recently in Kalibo, Aklan, marks a move toward a unified, centralized platform for managing salt production across the country.
Modernizing Salt Industry Data Management
SIMS is designed to function as an integrated, centralized platform that coordinates the management and monitoring of the salt industry. By digitizing the process, the Bureau aims to streamline salt registration and the collection of production data from the municipal level up to the national office.
Participants in the Kalibo training, which included Development of Salt Industry Program (DSIP) focal persons, engaged in hands-on walkthroughs of the system. This interactive approach was intended to build the technical skills necessary for field personnel to perform continuous monitoring and evaluation of industry activities.
Did You Know? The Salt Information Management System (SIMS) is built to collect and manage production data across four distinct administrative layers: national, regional, provincial, and municipal.
Director Chavez stresses data accuracy for system effectiveness
National Salt Program Management Office (NSPMO) Director Hannibal M. Chavez stressed that the utility of the digital platform relies entirely on the quality of the information entered by field staff. He noted that accurate data is the essential foundation for making the management system smarter and more effective.
The training sessions also served to align procedures across various implementing offices. Director Chavez stated, To make our system smarter, we must first make sure that our data is right. That is why your participation in this national training is essential.
By establishing a common understanding of these procedures, the agency expects to better support the operational needs of personnel stationed in the field.
Platform functions and training participants in Kalibo
What is the primary function of SIMS?

Why did the NSPMO prioritize this training for field personnel?
Director Hannibal M. Chavez emphasized that the system’s effectiveness depends on the accuracy of the data provided by those in the field. The training was intended to establish a common understanding of procedures and ensure the system meets the operational needs of staff working at the local level.
