President Biden delivered a eulogy for his predecessor, highlighting Carter’s unwavering character. "Jimmy Carter’s friendship taught me that a strong character means more than a title or the power we hold," Biden said. "He was always ahead of his time."
The two had a close bond, with Biden being one of the first Democratic senators to endorse Carter’s presidential campaign in the 1970s. Despite his passing, Biden finds comfort in the knowledge that Carter and his beloved wife, Rosalynn, are reunited.
Before the funeral service, Carter’s casket was transported from the Capitol to the cathedral and carried in by military pallbearers. earlier this week, the body lay in state at the Rotunda of the US Capitol, where tens of thousands of Americans paid their respects.
Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 98, was known for his relentless pursuit of peace. His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. One of the attendees at today’s funeral, who traveled 450 miles to be there, expressed her sadness, stating, "It’s the end of an era. We’ve lost our faith in our presidents, in humanity."
After the funeral, Carter’s body will be transported to Plains, Georgia, where he grew up and continued to live. He served as the 39th US President from 1977 to 1981, a time marked by economic challenges, the Israel-Egypt peace accord, and the Iran hostage crisis. His presidency was succeeded by the Republican Ronald Reagan in 1981.
His legacy, however, lives on, remembered by those who knew him and by the countless lives he touched with his commitment to justice, peace, and humanity.
