Talk show host Bill Maher mocked liberals on Monday for their continued obsession with President Donald Trump’s personality, arguing that after 10 years, these surface-level antics do not impact the lives of Americans. Maher spoke on his “Club Random” podcast, where he also discussed his recent Mark Twain Prize award.

podcast with British comedian Jack Whitehall, Bill Maher dismissed the ongoing outrage among many liberals regarding President Trump’s behavior. Maher contended that if individuals are still fixated on Trump’s personality a decade into his time in the spotlight, the issue lies with them rather than the president.
“Should we always be criticizing, as I do, what he actually does while he’s in office? Absolutely. But to keep just focusing on these personality things that we’ve talked about for ten years — they’re not going to change. That’s who he is. I don’t care when he calls me names now. It’s the way he does it. It’s the way he talks. It’s who he is.”

Maher noted that he distinguishes between policy actions and the president’s surface-level antics.
He emphasized that he ignores controversies regarding the White House lawn, reflecting pools, or social media name-calling, suggesting that those who dwell on such matters allow Trump to control their thoughts.
The Mark Twain Prize and White House Tensions
The conversation also touched upon Maher’s receipt of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which was awarded at the Kennedy Center on June 28, 2026. Maher offered backhanded praise for the president, alleging that Trump had attempted to prevent him from receiving the honor. Maher described the aftermath of the award process, noting that after the Kennedy Center removed Trump’s name from the building, the president covered the structure in drapery.
“I didn’t think it was ever going to happen. Because first he tried to stop it, but then it was going through, and then they took his name off the building. He didn’t like it. When they took his name off the building, he covered the building in drapery so you couldn’t see anything on the building. I’m not kidding.”

Artifacts of a Public Feud
During the podcast, Maher showcased a framed list of nearly 60 insults directed at him by Trump. Maher had brought the list to the White House during a dinner in March 2025 and asked the president to sign it. Maher framed the signed document as a great artifact of history.
Maher concluded the segment by contrasting his own outlook with that of his critics. He asserted that while he is a frequent target of the president’s personal attacks, he remains unbothered, stating, I’m winning. And I’m somebody he attacks personally, and I care less than you do. Your life is all about Donald Trump. Mine isn’t.
