The cheeky nordlings have taken to social media to express their amusement at Oslo’s inability to cope with just a few centimeters of the white stuff, with one commenter likening it to "a cataclysmic event."
Gunnar Wilhelmsen, mayor of Tromsø, and his colleagues from six other northern municipalities offered their assistance on Tuesday, proposing to send snowplows and other equipment to Oslo to help clear the streets. The gesture, though likely made in jest, highlights the vast difference in Norway between regions accustomed to snow and those that are not.
"Tøvete and direct pinlig," wrote one commenter, using the North Norwegian dialect to describe the embarrassment and discomfort felt by many Oslo residents. Others took to Twitter to express their disbelief, with one user posting a photo of a collapsed bus shelter and captioning it, "Skal det alltid være kaos i hele Oslo bare fordi det drysser ned litt hvitt pulver fra himmelen?"
While Oslo’s inhabitants may find it difficult to navigate the city in snowy conditions, netizens from the north are having a field day. "Hvem bryr seg?" asked one user, summing up the northerners’ apparent lack of concern for Oslo’s struggles.
Next up was Skjalg Fjellheim, a former political editor at Nordlys and current secretary of state in the Ministry of Finance. He slammed the north Norwegian mayors’ comments as "embarrassing" and "regionale ورد_."
"If snø was one of the real challenges we face in the center-periphery relationship in Norway, that would be one thing. But it’s not," Fjellheim told Nettavisen. "We have real problems to deal with – like the costs of living and working, digital infrastructure, and fair resource distribution."
Gunnar Stavrum, editor-in-chief of Nettavisen, waded into the fray with an opinion piece titled "Snow War: Why do northerners mock us Southerners who create the country’s wealth?" In it, he questions why Norway pours billions into northern municipalities that ridicule the very regions generating the nation’s prosperity.
"Should we start charging northern municipalities a toll for using motorways and bridges that southern taxpayers have paid for?" Stavrum mused. "Or perhaps we should just leave them to their own devices and let Donald Trump have northern Norway for his new Trump World resort?"
Helge Nitteberg, editor-in-chief of Nordlys, fired back with a piece titled "Snow falls on a thin-skinned editor from the south," in which he accused Stavrum of hypocrisy and reminded him that North Norway has provided Norway with oil and fish for decades.
Finally, Joacim Lund, a commentator for Aftenposten, piled on, arguing that the north’s laughter at Oslo’s predicament reveals a stunning lack of empathy and understanding. He, too, questioned the wisdom of investing in regions that display such little appreciation for their fellow Norwegians’ struggles.
As Oslo digs out from under the latest snowstorm, it seems one thing is certain: the north will indeed continue to laugh at the south’s expense. But perhaps, in the end, southern cities will have the last laugh – after all, they’ve got the humorless northerners’ money to warm their winter nights.
