Bomb Threat Reported at Cebu IT Park Mall

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Authorities launched a security operation at a Cebu IT Park mall on Friday, July 3, following a social media bomb threat. Emergency teams, including SWAT and K-9 units, cleared the building’s second, first, and third floors between 4:30 p.m. and 4:49 p.m. No explosive devices were recovered, and police continue to investigate the origin of the threat.

How the incident unfolded

The security response began after authorities received a social media message at approximately 3:40 p.m. claiming an improvised explosive device had been placed in a second-floor comfort room. According to Dave Tumulak, head of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC), the city immediately activated emergency protocols to assess the report’s credibility. An Incident Management Team was established at the nearby Garden Bloc to coordinate the response among the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Cebu City Transportation Office.

Security and clearing operations

By 4:30 p.m., SWAT personnel initiated a systematic sweep of the mall alongside security staff. The clearing process moved rapidly through the facility: the second floor was declared clear by 4:40 p.m., followed by the ground floor five minutes later. At 4:49 p.m., the third floor was also cleared. Despite these findings, authorities maintained a heightened security presence throughout the building as search and validation operations continued into the evening.

What happens next

The credibility of the threat remains under investigation. Police have not yet determined whether the social media report was a hoax or a legitimate security concern. As of the latest update, the PNP has not issued a final assessment of the incident. Further developments depend on the ongoing validation of the message’s source. In similar past incidents, such as the closure of Talisay City Hall due to a bomb threat, authorities have relied on digital forensics to trace the origin of such messages. Future updates from the PNP are expected as officials work to identify the individuals responsible for the alert.
