Brand New Day Outpaces Insidious 6 at the Box Office

Sony’s Marvel adventure “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” dominated the box office during its fourth weekend of release, collecting $39 million, according to box office tracking data. The film maintained the No. 1 spot ahead of fellow Sony release “Insidious: Out of the Further,” continuing a historic theatrical run that has pushed its worldwide earnings to $2.22 billion.

Box Office Standings and Global Totals for Spider-Man

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has amassed $855 million in Stateside revenues to date. According to industry tracking, it is only the fourth film in history to surpass $800 million in North America. The movie currently ranks as the third-highest grossing domestic release ever, sitting just behind 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” at $858 million and trailing 2015’s all-time domestic champ, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which finished at $936 million.

It also stands as the third-highest grossing movie in history globally, trailing 2009’s “Avatar” at $2.9 billion and “Avengers: Endgame” at $2.7 billion, while outpacing 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” at $2.3 billion.

Did you know? “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is within striking distance of becoming the first film in history to clear $1 billion at the North American box office alone.

Horror and Action Releases Round Out the Charts

Second place went to the paranormal sequel “Insidious: Out of the Further,” which brought in $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters, according to studio figures. The movie added $35 million internationally for a global start of $60 million. While domestic ticket sales dipped below the franchise’s prior entry, 2023’s “The Red Door” at $33 million, the sequel cost just $18 million to produce. Five prior installments in the horror franchise have generated a combined $800 million worldwide against low budgets.

“The drop from the opening in July 2023 is substantial but typical of these sequels,” says David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. He notes that “the horror audience is thoroughly engaged.”

Lionsgate’s action-thriller “Mutiny,” starring Jason Statham as a former Marine framed for murdering his billionaire boss, launched in sixth place with $7.5 million from 2,703 theaters against a $40 million production budget. Black Bear’s R-rated comedy “Spa Weekend,” led by Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris, and Michelle Buteau, landed at No. 9 with $3.05 million from 2,009 screens against a roughly $20 million price tag.

Projections for the Fall Film Slate

As summer popcorn season draws to a close, cinema operators report the highest-grossing summer movie season since COVID-19 disrupted the industry in 2020. Attention now shifts to autumn releases to maintain theatrical momentum. Upcoming titles include Tom Cruise’s comedy “Digger,” “Practical Magic 2” starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, a “Resident Evil” reboot directed by Zach Cregger, and Colleen Hoover’s “Verity” adaptation led by Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson.

Brand New Day Outpaces Insidious 6 at the Box Office

“There are a lot of cool and original ideas for the fall, which is what everyone wants to see,” exhibitor Chris Randleman of Flix Brewhouse told Variety. He notes that theater owners are focused on outperforming last year rather than matching summer figures: “Even if it’s a low bar, we are definitely going to exceed last year.”
