The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Lane Thomas and left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter from the Kansas City Royals in a trade announced late Saturday, less than 48 hours before the major league trade deadline, according to Mlbtraderumors. Braves President of Baseball Operations Alex Anthopoulos told reporters that Thomas is someone the club had been monitoring closely, with interest growing around the All-Star break when Yastrzemski was on the injured list.

Role and Offensive Profile for Lane Thomas
Thomas, a 30-year-old veteran outfielder in his eighth major league season, brings a right-handed bat to an Atlanta lineup that has frequently faced left-handed openers. He has played mostly center field for Kansas City this season, appearing in all three outfield spots, but will transition to left field in Atlanta and is expected to platoon with Mike Yastrzemski. Anthopoulos noted that Thomas will not be asked to play every day in center field as he did with the Royals.

Thomas has established himself as a reliable hitter against left-handed pitching, posting a .263 batting average with an .800 OPS against southpaws this year, compared to a .207/.293/.367 line against right-handers. Across 96 games with the Royals this season, he has hit 10 home runs and carried a .717 OPS, with a slash line of .230/.325/.392. His best statistical major league season came in 2023 with the Washington Nationals, when he hit 28 home runs and drove in 86 runs.
Bailey Falter Provides Pitching Depth Down the Stretch
Left-hander Bailey Falter joins the organization to provide organizational depth and an innings-eating option for the pitching staff, filling a mold similar to Carlos Carrasco and Martin Pérez. Falter will report to Triple-A Gwinnett’s pitching staff, according to Anthopoulos, though he could factor into the bullpen or rotation down the stretch.
The 29-year-old left-hander endured a difficult stint with the Royals’ major league club earlier in the year, going 0–2 with a 13.97 ERA across five appearances, which included two starts. He spent time on the injured list in early April with left elbow inflammation and was later designated for assignment in late May after clearing waivers. However, Falter has performed effectively at Triple-A Omaha, posting a 3.35 ERA across 43 innings with 46 strikeouts.
Prospects Head to Kansas City in the Exchange
Heading to the Royals in the trade are minor-league pitchers Lucas Braun and Carter Holton. Braun, a 24-year-old right-hander selected in the sixth round of the 2023 draft by the Braves, reached Triple-A Gwinnett for the first time this season and went 5–2 with a 3.92 ERA in 94 ⅓ innings split between Double-A and Triple-A. He was previously ranked as the No. 8 prospect in Atlanta’s system by MLB Pipeline.
Holton, a 23-year-old left-hander, made six starts for Single-A Augusta this season and posted a 4.32 ERA across 41 ⅔ innings in the low minors.
