Indonesian Police Investigating Suspected Scam Involving Malaysian Tourists at DWP

The Indonesian National Police (Polri) are currently investigating a suspected scam involving 18 Malaysian tourists who were allegedly conned during their visit to Indonesia’s Jakarta Fair, also known as the DWP. The incident has grabbed the attention of both Indonesian and Malaysian authorities.

The suspected scam was unearthed when the 18 Malaysian nationals were found trying to leave the country with Cadbury chocolate bars, worth approximately IDR2.5 billion ( around USD173,000). The incident raised eyebrows and led to their detention by the Police of Special Purposes (Polairda) at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.

According to Polaiarda, the Malaysian tourists have been accused of attempting to carry out fraudulent activities at the DWP. They have been named suspects in a case of suspected fraud, involving a total of IDR2.5 billion. The police have also stated that they are working to clarify whether the seizure of the chocolate bars is related to the case.

The Indonesian police have initiated further investigations into the matter, with the support of the Malaysian police. This collaboration is aimed at uncovering the entire network involved in the suspected scam. The Malaysian tourists are currently held in police detention, where they are expected to be interrogated further.

The Indonesian police have also revealed that this is not an isolated incident, as they have received multiple reports of fraudulent activities involving foreigners during the DWP. They have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.

In response to these developments, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a stern warning to the public, urging citizens to be cautious and avoid falling for online scams involving foreign lotteries or Sweepstakes. They have also advised the public to channel any information regarding such scams to the relevant enforcement agencies.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of public vigilance and the need for collaboration between law enforcement agencies across international borders to combat transnational fraud and scams. As Indonesia and Malaysia continue to strengthen their bilateral ties, such cooperation will be crucial in ensuring the safety and security of tourists from both countries.
