Breast Cancer Awareness: Veldhoven Marks Pink October
Veldhoven, Netherlands — The city of Veldhoven is donning pink this October, joining the global campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer. The annual ‘Pink October’ initiative, now in its 27th year, is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and support for those affected by the disease.
The month-long campaign, organized by the Dutch Breast Cancer Foundation (Borstkanker Nederland), aims to educate the public about breast cancer symptoms, encourage regular self-exams, and fundraise for research. Veldhoven, with its vibrant community spirit, is once again at the forefront of this crucial effort.
Pink City, Pink Hearts
Veldhoven’s city hall will be bathed in pink light throughout October, serving as a striking symbol of solidarity. Local businesses are also showing their support, with many decorating their windows and displaying pink ribbons. Schools and sports clubs are joining in, too, organizing awareness events and fundraisers.
"We want to send a clear message: Veldhoven stands with those affected by breast cancer," says Mayor John Jorritsma. "Every year, we see our city come together to support this important cause. It’s a testament to our community’s compassion and commitment."
Early Detection Saves Lives
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the Netherlands. According to the Dutch Cancer Society, about 19,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Early detection is key to improving survival rates, making initiatives like Pink October vital.
Dr. Marieke van der Pol, a local oncologist, emphasizes the importance of regular self-exams and mammograms. "Feeling a lump or noticing any changes in your breasts can be scary," she says. "But it’s crucial to act on these signs. Early detection saves lives."
