The Move Toward a Natural Silhouette
For years, the aesthetic surgery landscape was dominated by the pursuit of exaggerated curves. However, recent data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reveals a significant pivot. For the first time, the combined number of breast reduction procedures and implant removals has surpassed breast augmentations.

In a recent annual audit, breast enlargement procedures totaled 4,761—an 8% decrease from the previous year. Meanwhile, breast reductions reached 4,673 and implant removals accounted for 847 procedures.
This shift suggests that patients are moving away from the “obvious” look. According to Dr. Anil Joshi, a consultant ENT and facial plastic surgeon, patients are becoming more selective and are less interested in appearing as though they have had obvious work done.
Why “Athleisure” is Shaping Modern Surgery
The rise of form-fitting “athleisure” clothing and a broader cultural shift toward fitness are directly influencing surgical choices. Surgeons note that the demand for comfort during physical activity is a primary driver for several procedures.

Nora Nugent, the BAAPS president, explains that the move toward a natural silhouette better complements active lifestyles and the prevalence of gym wear. This trend extends beyond breast surgery; labiaplasty—a procedure to reduce, reshape, or increase the size of the labia—has seen a 6% increase.
Patients frequently cite discomfort during exercise and concerns regarding visibility in tight-fitting clothing as their main motivations. Interestingly, Nugent notes that many older women are only now discovering labiaplasty as a solution to symptoms they have managed for years.

The New Face of Cosmetic Surgery
While breast augmentations are declining, facial procedures are seeing a surge. Patients are increasingly opting for subtle refinements that refresh the appearance without altering the fundamental structure of the face.
One of the fastest-growing trends is the brow lift, which has surged by 27% overall. Other increases have been noted in facelifts and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), the latter of which saw 3,381 procedures—an 8% increase.
This reflects a broader motivation: it is no longer about achieving a specific “ideal” size or shape, but about reflecting a specific stage of life and maintaining a functional, natural appearance.
Shifting Preferences in Male Aesthetics
The data also highlights a changing landscape for men. While women still account for the vast majority of cosmetic procedures (93.9%, with 25,217 operations performed), the types of surgeries men choose are evolving.
Facial surgery now dominates the male category. For the first time, eyelid surgery has become the most popular procedure for men, with 346 procedures (up 8%). This has overtaken rhinoplasty, which saw a significant decline to 273 procedures, down 18%.
This indicates that men, like women, are prioritizing a refreshed, rested appearance over structural changes to the nose or face.
