Buium Commits Long-Term to Vancouver
According to comments provided by the player, the decision to sign a maximum-length extension was straightforward after experiencing the local hockey market.
“When they came with the offer it wasn’t a hard decision to make,” Buium said. “Personally, I wanted to be here for eight years, I didn’t want it to be shorter, and I’m really glad. I love the city. I love the fan base. I love where this organization is going.”
Buium arrived in Vancouver alongside forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. In return, the Canucks sent defenceman Quinn Hughes to Minnesota. Since joining the Canucks, Buium has recorded 12 points, including three goals and nine assists, across 45 games last season. Across his 76 career NHL games split between the Wild and Canucks, he has accumulated six goals and 20 assists for 26 points, alongside one assist in four Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Canucks Management Praises Pedigree and Leadership
Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson emphasized that the lucrative extension reflects more than short-term on-ice production. According to Johnson, the organization evaluated Buium’s trajectory over the next three to five years when structuring the long-term partnership.
“This contract isn’t about Zeev the player today or tomorrow,” Johnson said. “It’s where we see him in three, four, and five years and so it was something that we felt if both sides could come in agreement and make a commitment to each other, it was something we’d be excited to get done.”
Johnson highlighted the defenceman’s maturity at age 20—he turns 21 in December—noting that leadership qualities are rarely found in players so young.
