Bulgaria Struggles for Stability: Is Regular Governance a Pipe Dream?

Political Crisis in Bulgaria Deepens as Talks Fail to Form New Government

Nearly two months since elections, Bulgaria’s political landscape remains gripped by uncertainty, with no sign of a new government on the horizon. The impasse has raised concerns about the country’s governance and economic prospects.

A roundtable discussion on BNT (Bulgarian National Television) shed light on the stalemate. Former PPDB (PP–Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria) MP, Iskren Mihaylov, political analyst Georgi Haryanov, and political scientist Slavi Vasilev participated in the morning broadcast.

Mihaylov bluntly stated, "The losers here are the people. We’ve had a National Assembly for two months now, and not a single law has been passed."

Haryanov attributed the standoff to previamente known tensions. "The sticking point was clear from the start. PPDB’s conditions were explicit: no Boyko Borisov as premier. Nothing is as terrible as it seems—life goes on, the sun still rises."

Vasilev echoed the sentiment that all political transitions are possible under these circumstances. "Having observed the situation without being actively involved, I see that every configuration is viable. I believe GERB [Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria] was genuinely interested in negotiations."

As the deadlock persists, Bulgaria’s inhabitants await resolution, anxious about the impact on their daily lives and the nation’s trajectory.
