The year 2024 has been officially declared as the hottest on record for Bulgaria since at least 1930, according to data analyzed by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). The average temperature for the country was around 2.1°C above the climate norm, outpacing even the previous record-breaking year of 2023 by approximately 0.5°C.

2024 was characterized by an exceptionally warm winter and summer, with above-normal temperatures persisting throughout spring and autumn, albeit with smaller positive anomalies. Only May and November saw below-normal temperatures. The summer of 2024 was the hottest ever recorded in Bulgaria, with June being the warmest month, followed by a series of heatwaves in July and August, featuring daily maximum temperatures exceeding 32°C.

In the Sandanaski region, a record-breaking streak of 9 consecutive days saw maximum temperatures surpassing 40°C in July. Meanwhile, severe heatwaves in central and eastern North Bulgaria persisted until late August. Precipitation levels were down by around 8% compared to the norm, with 610mm recorded nationwide on average.

Throughout 2024, Bulgaria faced numerous extreme weather events, some of which resulted in significant damage and human casualties. The combination of high temperatures, low rainfall, and human negligence led to hundreds of wildfires across the country, as reported by NIMH.
