Bungie has delayed the Season 3 update for its sci-fi extraction shooter Marathon alongside its long-awaited permanent PvE mode, pushing the release to December 8 as the studio abandons strict seasonal schedules entirely, according to a recent company blog post.
Bungie Delays Marathon Season 3 and PvE Mode to December
The developer confirmed that updates originally slated for September will now launch under the title of the Symbiosis update. According to the studio’s official announcement, the decision aims to ensure the content meets player expectations following community feedback regarding game depth and variety.
“We previously shared plans for Marathon’s next major update to launch on September 22,” Bungie stated in the blog post. “We know many players were looking forward to it, and we appreciate your patience. We are adjusting our plans to ensure the update meets your expectations.”

Bungie’s upcoming Symbiosis update will introduce a new Runner shell, a social weapon-testing space, and an experimental team deathmatch mode alongside the permanent PvE addition.
Symbiosis Update Features and October Economy Reset
When the Symbiosis update deploys in December, players will gain access to several new features designed to overhaul the gameplay loop. These additions include a permanent PvE mode, a social space for testing weapons together, an improved onboarding experience for newcomers, and a refreshed Perimeter zone.
To bridge the gap before December, Bungie scheduled a smaller update for October 6. According to the studio, this interim patch will reset the game’s progression and economy, introduce a new Rewards Pass, and bring back Vault Breaker—a temporary PvE mode that previously appeared earlier this year.
Shift Away From Strict Seasonal Schedules
Alongside the content delays, Bungie announced it is moving away from a rigid seasonal framework. The studio cited the need for greater flexibility to build, test, and refine features before publication.
“Since launch, you’ve told us Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term. We agree,” Bungie noted. “Addressing that feedback requires us to change both what we’re building and how we deliver it.”
The extraction shooter has faced retention challenges since launching earlier this year. These hurdles arrived amid wider corporate restructuring at the studio, which included mass layoffs that cut at least 290 jobs.
