Local Businesses Struggle as Works Impact Accessibility; Compensation Talks Ongoing

Business owners in the heart of Amsterdam are facing a tough time as construction works outside their stores are making it challenging for customers to reach them. The situation, described by one shop owner, is "unpleasant" with mats not lying flat, slippery surfaces due to recent rain, and bicycles increasing the risk of accidents.

The municipality, under the guidance of Verkeerswethouder Melanie van der Horst, has been holding bi-weekly talks with affected parties, aiming to keep businesses accessible. However, they admitted that meeting all demands isn’t always feasible.

During this period, some businesses may be eligible for compensation if customer footfall significantly decreases. Disseldorp, chairperson of the local business association, acknowledged the complexity of claiming such compensation. He plans a meeting in the new year to discuss this topic further.

He highlights the need for consumers to support these local businesses, "It’s tough out there for our local entrepreneurs and small shops. I urge residents and all of Amsterdam to patronize these impacted businesses."

Despite the challenges, local businesses remain resilient, hoping for a quick resolution and continued customer support.
